ADHD: Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

Learn the #1 Cause Of ADHD And How To Eliminate Symptoms For Good Without Any Drugs!

As of 2014, Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is the most prevalent psychiatric illness of young people in America, affecting 11 percent of them at some point between the ages of 4 and 17.

Diet and environmental factors can contribute to ADHD symptoms, but another scientific reason has recently been disovered. New neuroscience research shows that people with A.D.H.D. are actually hard-wired to need more stimulation. That’s because they have slower brain reward circuits, so much of everyday life feels routine and understimulating.

To compensate, they are drawn to new and exciting experiences and often get impatient and restless with the structure of a normal daily routine. In other words, they require more stimulation or new adventures to focus their attention.

To most people, A.D.H.D. looks like a lack of focus and impulsive behavior. But to those who have it, the world they are in is just not that interesting. However, if something new and stimulating appears, they can have a laserlike focus. So how is this possible?

Understanding Dopamine

The answer lies in a natural chemical neurotransmitter in the brain called dopamine. Dopamine is released when we are presented with something exciting, like sex, money, a big gift and more . But dopamine is more than a pleasure response, as fear and heightened awareness can also release excess dopamine.

Those with A.D.H.D. had significantly fewer dopamine receptors (called D2 and D3). Furthermore, the lower the levels of D2 and D3, the greater their symptoms of inattention.

There is scientific research to back this up. Dr. Nora Volkow from the National Institute On Drug Abuse studied dopamine in poeple with ADHD against those without. What she found was striking. Those with A.D.H.D. had significantly fewer dopamine receptors (called D2 and D3). Furthermore, the lower the levels of D2 and D3, the greater their symptoms of inattention were.

These findings suggest that people with A.D.H.D have reward circuits that are less sensitive than the rest of us. This can make routine activities seem dull and even painfully boring to people with ADHD.

Drugs like Adderall and Ritalin do not solve the issue or improve the condition. They just  mask symptoms.

Psychostimulants like Adderall and Ritalin help by blocking the transport of dopamine back into neurons, thus increasing its level in the brain. But there are several problems with taking medications. For one, the side effects can be severe and icnlude anxiety, stomach pains, vomiting, increased blood pressure, heart rate and more.

Also, drugs like Adderal and Ritalin do not solve the issue or improve the condition. They just mask symptoms. Anyone looking for a permanent solution would be well advised to steer clear of these medications.

One of the most effective ways to increase dopamine is #1 below. Read on to learn more.

What is Dopamine?

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that helps control the brain’s reward and pleasure centers, as well as emotional responses. Dopamine deficiency results in Parkinson’ Disease, and people with low dopamine activity may be more prone to addiction. The presence of a certain kind of dopamine receptor is also associated with sensation-seeking people, more commonly known as”risk takers.”

How To Improve ADHD Naturally

There is a strong connection between ADHD symptoms and dopamine levels. The scientific evidence supports it, as do numerous case studies. The answer to ADHD may simply lie in proper dopamine levels

There are 3 main ways to increase dopamine levels naturally. They include:

  1. Neurofeedback
  2. Reduce Calories / Modify Diet
  3. Exercise
Is Neurofeedback Effective?

In November 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics approved biofeedback and neurofeedback as a Level 1 or “best support” treatment option for children suffering from ADHD. For parents looking for an effective, non-drug treatment of ADHD, neurofeedback is one worth serious consideration.

Neurofeedback

There is scientific research that shows Beta brainwaves increase dopamine levels. Beta brainwaves are responsible for conscious thought, logical thinking and stimulation. Proper beta waves allows us to focus and complete school or work-based tasks easily.

Neurofeedback is non-invasive, computer based system that helps regulate all brainwaves, which in turn can impact most neurological conditions and their symptoms, including ADHD.

There are decades of research and case studies that support the effectiveness of neurofeedbakck on neurological disorders like ADHD. You can learn more about neurofeedback on our site.

Calories & Diet

It is known that caloric restriction is associated with longevity and an increased lifespan.  Restricting the number of calories you consume may also have an effect on neurotransmitter levels and dopamine neurons (Source: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23966705).

Another natural way to increase dopamine levels is that of altering your diet. The goal should be to eat foods that increase dopamine, or more specifically, foods high in L-Tyrosine – an amino acid precursor that crosses the blood-brain barrier and converts to dopamine. If you have been shoveling down loads of carbs, but aren’t eating much protein, you’re probably deficient in L-Tyrosine, which inevitably results in lower than optimal dopamine.

Exercise & Sleep

Many experts believe that physical exercise may increase dopamine receptors, enhance dopamine activity, and boost levels of dopamine in certain regions.

One 30 minute aerobic session alone won’t do it, but consistent exercise over a long-term may boost dopamine levels. Other benefits of exercise including growth of new brain cells and burning excess calories (Source: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12758062).

To ensure that your brain increases dopamine naturally, you’ll want to make sure that you’re getting enough sleep.  Lack of sleep has been shown to reduce concentrations of neurotransmitters and their receptors.

Schedule your appointment now and get a Brain Map with your first visit!

A Brain Map is a non-invasive tool we use to identify the problem areas of the brain. It is the most accurate tool available for identifying irregular brainwaves. It also generates a set of protocols that can correct your specific brainwave irregularities using neurofeedback.

It is important to note that a Brain Map is painless, safe, accurate and non-invasive. There really is no better tool for analyzing brainwaves and collecting customized data for each individual.
